Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was designed around the dialectic of balancing self-acceptance with the development of new skills. Our DBT-informed therapists will help you learn and apply practical tools for managing emotions, tolerating distress, improving relationships, and creating a life that feels more stable and fulfilling.

If you're looking for DBT-informed treatment online or in Highland Park, NJ; Brooklyn, NY; or Frederick, MD, you've come to the right place. Contact us today to schedule an intake!

Intense emotions can leave individuals feeling overwhelmed, stuck in unhealthy patterns, or unsure how to cope with life's challenges. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is based on the understanding that many people were never taught the skills needed to effectively manage emotions, tolerate distress, or navigate relationships. When emotions feel too big or painful, individuals may turn to behaviors that provide short-term relief but create long-term problems. DBT helps individuals develop practical skills to manage difficult emotions while building a life that feels more stable, meaningful, and fulfilling.

Your therapist will begin DBT-informed therapy by helping you understand the patterns that contribute to emotional distress and identify the areas where additional skills may be helpful. Together, you will learn strategies for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Therapy focuses on balancing acceptance and change—helping you acknowledge your experiences without judgment while also working toward meaningful growth. Over time, these skills can increase resilience, strengthen relationships, and improve your ability to respond effectively to life's challenges.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a well-established, evidence-based treatment supported by decades of research. Originally developed to treat chronic emotion dysregulation, DBT has been shown to be effective for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, self-destructive behaviors, and personality disorders. By combining validation, skill-building, and structured support, DBT helps individuals create lasting change and greater emotional well-being.

Our practice does not offer adherent DBT at this time, as we do not offer group skills training or DBT consultation team. Our DBT-informed therapists offer individual therapy and phone coaching.
