Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions

Rather than requiring children to participate directly in therapy, SPACE works with parents to reduce accommodations and respond to anxiety in supportive, confidence-building ways. Our SPACE therapists will guide you in helping your child face anxiety with greater independence while strengthening your connection and support.

If you're looking for SPACE therapy online or in Highland Park, NJ, you've come to the right place. Contact us today to schedule an intake!

Often, parents of anxious children are eager to make changes to support their children but aren't sure how. Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is based on the understanding that anxiety is influenced not only by a child’s internal experience, but also by the ways families respond to it. When parents are given the right tools, they can play a powerful role in helping their child face fears and build confidence.

Your therapist will begin SPACE by working with you to identify patterns of accommodation—ways you may be unintentionally helping your child avoid anxiety. Together, you will learn how to respond with both empathy and confidence, gradually reducing accommodations while supporting your child’s independence. This approach does not require the child to attend sessions, and instead focuses on empowering parents to create meaningful change at home. Over time, children learn to tolerate distress, face fears, and develop greater resilience.

SPACE is an evidence-based treatment supported by growing research and clinical practice. It has been shown to be effective for a range of anxiety disorders and is especially helpful for children who may be reluctant to participate in therapy. By focusing on parents as agents of change, SPACE creates lasting improvements in both anxiety and family functioning.
